About Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for maintaining normal calcium and bone hemostasis. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) can be synthesized by humans in the skin upon exposure to ultraviolet-B (UVB) from sunlight, or it can be obtained from the diet.
Immune system: Receptors for vitamin D are found on the surface B cells, T cells, and white blood cells. These cells are capable of synthesizing the active vitamin D metabolite. Vitamin D can modulate both the TH1 and the TH2 arms of the immune system. The beneficial effects of supplementing with vitamin D extend far beyond the effects on bone and calcium homeostasis. Calcium Balance: Maintenance of serum calcium levels within a narrow range is vital for normal functioning of the nervous system, bone growth, and adequate bone density.
Cardiovascular Support: In humans, vitamin D deficiency is associated with the following: vascular dysfunction; arterial stiffening; left ventricular hypertrophy; and worsened metrics of diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
Cancer: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with colon, breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Ensuring adequate vitamin D intake may be critically important to reduce the risk of cancer. Ref: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1470481/
